Question by Amanda L: What are stimulating pet rat toys for their cage?
I keep reading about “stimulating” rat toys and how they are always “problem-solving”. I might be getting some rats soon. What are some good stimulating toys that a I can put in their rat cage?

Rat toys can be almost anything, as they like to play with lots of different things. I usually stay away from store-bought toys to save money and give my rats things like toilet paper tubes, shredded newspaper (they love making nests out of it), and home made things to climb on top of or go inside like cardboard boxes with a hole cut in them. For store-bought toys, bird toys make good toys for rats, I found a bird play area that I have set up on top of their cage right now that they like. There are some tunnels made for ferrets they enjoy, and some rats like running in wheels.

The best rat toy, though, is you! Make sure you take your rats out often and either walk around with them on your shoulder or in your pocket or sit with them on the couch and let them run around while you are there to watch them. It will socialize them better, help them bond to you, and is a fun ‘toy’ that is never boring!
